'Going to do that': Tottenham had planned to sign £19m midfielder this summer – journalist

Tottenham have already failed with one of their summer transfer plans.

Indeed, according to Dean Jones, Spurs have already been beaten to one signing heading into this summer.

Speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, Jones was speaking about Adam Wharton’s rise at Crystal Palace, and he says that Tottenham’s plan was to sign Wharton this summer, but they were beaten to the punch by Crystal Palace in January.

Tottenham planned to sign Adam Wharton

Jones spoke about Wharton, claiming that Tottenham were going to do a deal for the £19m man this summer.

“I can’t see Wharton leaving yet, especially after Palace put faith in him. They put the money there in Jan. Tottenham were going to do that deal this summer coming up, but they were beaten to it because he was taken there and then,” Jones said.

Tottenham seriously missed out on Wharton

Tottenham may live to regret this one for years to come.

Adam Wharton has taken to life in the Premier League like a duck to water, and he’s already being linked with a £60m move to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham are seriously lacking balance in their midfield, and Wharton would’ve been just what the doctor ordered.

Unfortunately, Spurs wanted to bide their time on this one and that opened the door for Palace to swoop, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Acting decisively is so important in the transfer window. If there is a player you want to sign you have to go out and get them rather than biding your time. Otherwise, you can easily have your deal hijacked and be left with egg on your face.

Wharton has an exciting future ahead of him, and, eventually, he will likely get a move to a big club, but if Spurs ever do go back in for him, he’ll cost way more than £19m, that’s for sure.
