Jamie Carragher thinks Arsenal duo can rival legacy left by Man Utd and Chelsea legends

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal’s strong Premier League campaign will end with title glory, but they have impressed regardless.

Mikel Arteta’s side have taken Manchester City all the way in the title race, with the destination of the Premier League trophy to be decided on the final day, and their performances in 2024 have been outstanding.

Arsenal’s defence has been the best in the Premier League, with the backline forming a strong base for the rest of the team to build upon, and there have been some sensational performers.

Ben White is finally getting the credit he deserves as his performances have been compared to Chelsea icons Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta, and centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have been the best in the division, but were overlooked for Virgil van Dijk when it came to Player Of The Year nominees.

However, Jamie Carragher has now claimed that the pair could end up going down in Premier League history if they can maintain their level of performance.

Jamie Carragher claims William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes can match Premier League legends

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher compared the solid partnership of the two centre-backs to some of the best the Premier League has seen.

“I mean, as a partnership, they have been together for really sort of two years, but when you think of them sort of this season, I think if this partnership stays together for the next three or four years, we are talking about this alongside Ferdinand and Vidic, Carvalho and John Terry,” he stated.

Arsenal have conceded 28 goals in 37 Premier League games this season, the best record of anyone in the division, and the two imposing centre-backs have been key to this.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes can become Arsenal legends

Both Saliba and Gabriel still have years ahead of them as centre-backs, and they have thrived in what is just their second season as a centre-back partnership.

Arsenal have had some top partnerships in the past. Tony Adams and Martin Keown, and later Sol Campbell were title winners, whilst Kolo Toure also thrived alongside Campbell with the Invincibles.

Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were perhaps the previous best defensive partnership of the Emirates era, but the current two have arguably surpassed them in ability, and if they win titles together, they can cement themselves as two of the best centre-backs in the history of the club.
