‘You add about 2 years’: John McGinn makes hilarious Tottenham claim amid battle with Aston Villa for fourth

Aston Villa staged a stunning comeback against Liverpool on Monday night to put themselves within touching distance of Champions League football.

Tottenham Hotspur are due to play Manchester City on Tuesday night – and it seems as though a certain John McGinn will be watching.

If Spurs, who could hand the advantage to Arsenal in the Premier League title race, fail to win then fourth will be secured for Unai Emery’s side.

Aston Villa’s end-of-season award will be taking place at the same time as Tottenham’s home clash against Man City, so you can bet your bottom dollar that the goals will be filtering through the room as they are going in.

Given the nature in which Pep Guardiola’s side play, you can’t see anything but goals from his team.

But the same could be said for Tottenham, who play some of the most expansive football in the country.

Nonetheless, with Villa pushing for that all-important Champions League spot, it seems as though John McGinn has been watching them of late.

The all-action midfielder hilariously admitted, after Villa’s 3-3 draw against Liverpool, that watching Spurs ‘adds about two years onto yourself’, as he told BBC Sport.

Well, he will certainly be feeling the nerves on Tuesday night because it’s going to be huge in knowing where this Champions League race ends up.

“It’s the Player of the Year dinner, believe it or not,” said McGinn. “So, I am sure we will get the reaction.

“I am quite glad of that because I was watching the end of Tottenham’s games recently and you add about two years onto yourself. I am sure someone will have it on their phone. If the results are going our way, then I am sure the sparkling water will change to a wee bit more sparkling.”

Unai Emery is a genius

Whatever happens, if Villa secure fourth on Tuesday night, on the final day of the season or end up fifth.

It has been a season to remember and Emery has progressed the club in huge, huge ways.

This is just the start. This is a long-term project for Villa and the hope is for the team to end their long wait to win a trophy and continually play Champions League football.

That’s where Emery’s genius comes into it because he is the brains behind it all and as long as he remains at the club, Villa will continue to move on the up.

Let’s just hope, for this season at least, the reward is playing against Europe’s best next season, with Villa facing Crystal Palace on Sunday for the season finale.
