‘The standout player’: Paul Merson says Man City have a player who's been better than Cole Palmer

Paul Merson has named one Manchester City player he thinks has been better than Cole Palmer this season.

The Manchester club are approaching the end of another Premier League campaign which could see them become the first side to win four English titles in a row.

Looking back to the previous summer transfer window, the Blues saw numerous players make moves in and out of the club.

One of their most notable departures saw Palmer join Chelsea in a deal worth £42.5m.

Since then, the winger has gone on to flourish at the West London club, finding the back of the net 24 times and supplying 14 assists in 43 games across all competitions.

Ahead of tonight’s away match against Tottenham Hotspur, one pundit and former top-flight player has been singing the praises of one particular figure in City’s squad who he feels has outperformed Palmer in this campaign.

In his latest column for Sportskeeda where he previewed and predicted the scores for the upcoming selection of midweek Premier League matches, Merson had this to say about Phil Foden and his performances this season.

He said: “Phil Foden has been the main man for Pep Guardiola this season and I believe he has been the standout player in the Premier League.

“Cole Palmer has done great things at Chelsea, but the pressure is different at Manchester City and Foden has scored big goals in big football matches to take them within touching distance of another Premier League trophy.”

Foden vs Palmer

Even though Palmer has scored more goals (21 vs 17) and provided more assists (10 vs 8) than Foden in the Premier League this season, the City star has a higher rate of shots on target (43.9% vs 38.9%) and has made more key passes (67 vs 66) than his former teammate before tonight’s match at Tottenham.

While both players have had impressive individual campaigns, that have seen them both be nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season award, we feel that if Foden were to help his side win the title again, he should win the award.
