AI war erupts as Google launches most powerful system yet in battle against OpenAI

Google has launched its most efficient artificial intelligence system as an AI war flares up against OpenAI.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind announced the newest addition to the Gemini model series - Gemini 1.5 Flash during Google I/O on Tuesday.

It comes as tech companies are increasingly innovating their products around AI.

The AI battle is particularly important for Google because the new tools give consumers more advanced and creative ways to access online information.

It follows OpenAI's launch of a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT on Monday.

The company said GPT-4o is "twice as fast" as GPT-4 Turbo and a fraction of the cost.

According to a vice president working on Gemini, the improved model has the ability to process multiple large documents — 1,500-pages total — or summarise 100 emails.

Hassabis said: "We heard from developers that they wanted something faster and even more cost-effective."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Sissie Hsiao, Vice President at Google and General Manager for Gemini Experiences added: "You can quickly get answers and insights about dense documents, like figuring out the details of the pet policy in your rental agreement or comparing key arguments of multiple long research papers.

She added that Gemini 1.5 Pro will also be able to handle an hour of video content.

In the latest OpenAI upgrade, 50 different languages are now available, alongside improved quality and speed of ChatGPT.

Chiefs said OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) will allow developers to start building applications using the new model immediately.

Google says Gemini 1.5 Pro has a 2 million token window, which indicates how much information the model is able to process at once.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said: "It offers the longest context window of any foundational model yet."

Gemini 1.5 Pro will be available for testing in Workspace Labs.
