EU to broaden sanctions on Iran, citing support for Russia in Ukraine

The EU member states have decided to extend the existing sanctions regime against Iran, the EU Council announced in Brussels on Tuesday.

"The Council today decided to broaden the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran's military support of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," the statement said.

The framework, which was adopted in July 2023, prohibits the export of components used in the construction and production of aerial drones and provides for travel restrictions and asset freeze measures against those involved in Iran's drone programme.

Providing funds to those involved in drone manufacture is also banned.

Justifying the move, the ministers noted that the EU had immediately condemned the April 13 Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel.

The Iranian attack came in response to a suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy grounds in Damascus. Israel has not denied responsibility for that attack.
