Former Man Utd coach’s agent holds ‘meeting’ with club amid Ten Hag uncertainty, claims journalist

Manchester United continue to be linked with new manager amid uncertainty over the future of current boss Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag came into this season looking like the answer.

United finished third in the Premier League last season and looked to be moving in the right direction.

This season has been one of immense disappointment though and United may even miss out on European football entirely, never mind the Champions League.

Ten Hag as been forced to deal with injury problems all season but the performance levels just haven’t been good enough.

That leaves Ten Hag in danger of losing his job and with Ineos making big changes at Old Trafford, change could be coming in the dugout.

Kieran McKenna linked with Manchester United

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel was heavily linked with a move to United last week as he prepares to leave the Allianz Arena this summer.

Reports earlier on Tuesday suggested that Brentford boss Thomas Frank is a serious contender for the job if Ten Hag goes.

Another name is now in the mix – and it would involve a return to Old Trafford.

Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna reports that Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is a candidate to become the next United manager.

Aouna claims that there has even been a meeting in recent days with United speaking to McKenna’s agent.

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons adds that McKenna is indeed on United’s radar but other Premier League clubs are keen.

McKenna may also be tempted to stay at Ipswich having guided them to the Premier League this season.

The Northern Irishman has achieved back-to-back promotions with Ipswich and Ineos have seemingly been left impressed.

McKenna’s history at Manchester United

McKenna joined the United coaching setup in 2016, leaving his role in the Tottenham Hotspur ranks to become United’s Under-18 manager.

Just two years later, McKenna was promoted to the first-team coaching staff under Jose Mourinho.

McKenna then formed part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff before being kept on by Ralf Rangnick.

Come December 2021, McKenna landed his first managerial job as Ipswich Town brought him to Portman Road.

That move has been a masterstroke with McKenna guiding Ipswich into the Premier League.

The 38-year-old has earned enormous praise for his playing style and it’s no surprise that United are paying close attention.

McKenna has been hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by pundit Chris Sutton but whether he is ready for the United job is another matter.

The expectation levels at United are enormous, a world away from life at Ipswich.

McKenna is incredibly young too and whilst he knows the lay of the land at United having already been in the Old Trafford ranks, appointing him would be a big gamble from Ineos in their first summer.
