'Won Manchester City the league': Carragher says Pep has another hero tonight in win over Spurs, not Haaland

Manchester City are on the brink of a fourth straight Premier League title, after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 – and pundit Jamie Carragher was left amazed by something one player did towards the end of the game.

City have gone two points clear at the top of the table after a hard-fought win down in north London.

It was not the best performance and for large spells, Spurs did hold their own.

Nerves seemed to play a part for a while. But City broke the deadlock in the second-half when Kevin De Bruyne brilliantly supplied Erling Haaland with a brilliant ball across the goal.

Haaland then scored from the penalty spot in injury-time after a foul on Jeremy Doku.

But there was a very big moment in the 85th minute that left Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher amazed…

Tonight’s game was definitely a nervous affair.

City just couldn’t really get their usual rhythm, and were definitely sloppy in the first-half.

The game was on a knife-edge, and even when City took the lead there was always a possibility Spurs could threaten.

And they did in the 85th minute, when Manuel Akanji showed too much of the ball to Heung-min Son, who raced through on goal.

Stefan Ortega though, on for the injured Ederson, came up with an absolutely colossal save to deny the South Korean.

At the end of the game, Carragher selected Ortega as his Man of the Match, and said of the German: “I don’t think this has happened too often in football. But this man has won Manchester City the league with that save from Son and that save from Kulusevski.

“He’s only been on for half an hour. But that man has come off the bench, and has made sure his team have won another Premier League title.”

An incredible night for Ortega

What a night for Stefan Ortega, who as Carragher suggests, has probably won Manchester City an unprecedented fourth straight Premier League title.

The saves from Kulusevski and Son were absolutely vital – but fans will not be too surprised.

Because we have seen several times this season Ortega come off the bench and made important saves and big contributions.

He may play second fiddle to Ederson. But the drop-off in quality from the Brazilian to him is practically nothing.

Fans will seriously hope he stays for another season, because he is the best number two in the world.
