Rangers earn stay of title execution as ‘caged bird’ allowed chance to soar at flat Ibrox

Rangers earn a stay of title execution as the club’s comeback victory over Dundee keeps Scottish Premiership glory in Celtic’s hands.

An injury-ravaged Rangers team did however do their best to hand Old Firm rivals Celtic a 54th title in the first half of proceedings.

Going 2-0 down in the distinctive style of Philippe Clement’s Rangers team, the club signed off at Ibrox for the season with a five-goal comeback romp.

The result cuts the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to three points but Celtic will be crowned champions if they avoid defeat at Rugby Park tomorrow evening.

Rangers in five-goal Dundee comeback

Whilst there was no suggestion Rangers could rescue their title ambitions against Dundee, many of the fans who had shown up at Ibrox did so through gritted teeth.

Rangers have conspired to blow a superb opportunity in the Premiership this season after coming back from seven points behind under Belgian manager Philippe Clement.

A run of one Scottish Premiership win in five matches handed the title ascendency to Celtic, who all but secured the title with a victory over 10-man Rangers at the weekend.

But any title celebrations have been held off courtesy of yet another comeback victory at Ibrox.

Boos rang out around Ibrox at half-time when Rangers shipped two late goals at the end of the first-half, the Gers once again conceding back-to-back quickfire goals.

Jordan McGhee and Antonio Portales had Dundee and Celtic fans celebrating before Ross McCausland hauled Rangers back into the game before the interval.

In the second half, Rangers dominated proceedings with the comeback orchestrated by Todd Cantwell, who netted a fizzing cross-come-shot after Cyriel Dessers had equalised.

This comes after Cantwell had left a cryptic ‘caged bird’ Instagram post heading into the weekend’s Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

Scott Wright then netted twice – his first Premiership goals in two years – to have Rangers fans asking, where was all this when we needed it?

Gers team on hiding to nothing at flat Ibrox

It’s hard really to give Rangers any credit for this end of season victory.

A team of crocked, uninspired has-beens have conspired to completely bottle the Premiership campaign and as they made their way around the park at the end of the game, the atmosphere was decidedly flat.

Philippe Clement must be ruthless with a Rangers team who struggle to make a difference when it really matters and this result and performance will frustrate as much as anything else.

Rangers were on a hiding to nothing against Dundee.

Anything but a victory would’ve drawn the ire of the crowd but even this win will earn the team little plaudits.

It’s also hard to take any victory which sees Robbie Fraser, Ben Davies, James Tavernier and Cole McKinnon as the club’s back-four come the final whistle in any way seriously.

It’s over to Derek McInnes and Kilmarnock to take the Scottish Premiership to the final day, as Rangers fans reflect on a season of missed opportunities, defined by a team who cannot resist making things harder for themselves than it ever has to be.
