Steely-eyed Cantwell’s surprise response to freak goal; gives 3-word verdict on Old Firm snub

Todd Cantwell netted a long-range stunner in the win over Dundee, but we’ll never know if the Rangers star meant to shoot.

As the Ibrox side battled back from 2-0 down in the first-half, Todd Cantwell completed the turnaround when he rasped in a stunner from out wide.

Whilst Kenny Miller initially thought it was a cross in Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, replays appeared to show Cantwell was aiming for goal.

Come the final whistle, Sky Sports asked Player of the Match Todd about the goal and the Rangers playmaker was ‘not interested’ in the discussion.

Cantwell ‘not interested’ in goal debate

Ordinarily when a player scores such a stunning goal, they might be willing to indulge a few journalists after the match.

But Todd Cantwell was not interested in discussing whether or not he meant to score v Dundee as he referenced the weekend’s Scottish Premiership defeat to Celtic.

Rangers earned a stay of title execution in the victory over Dundee with the Parkhead side likely to be crowned champions at Rugby Park tomorrow.

“I’m not interested in talking about that to be honest,” Cantwell told Sky Sports.

“Obviously we had a disappointing week last weekend so we had to win today, that’s the bottom line.”

Todd Cantwell was also asked about showing a reaction following the Old Firm defeat.

The midfielder had ramped up a feeling of frustration heading into the fixture with a ‘caged bird’ Instagram post.

Not involved in the 2-1 Old Firm defeat to Celtic, Cantwell only had three words for one journalist’s prodding over the situation.

When asked if he it was important to show a reaction after not playing in the Old Firm v Celtic, a steely-eyed Cantwell responded: “It’s always important.”

Rangers star laments ‘sloppy goals’ v Dundee

Rangers ran out 5-2 winners over Dundee despite going 2-0 down in the match.

Going behind is the hallmark of this Rangers side who love to make things more difficult for themselves than it ever has to be.

The team really were on a hiding to nothing here with the atmosphere always threatening to turn toxic.

Cantwell – who was far and away the best player on the pitch – claims the team owed it to the fans to turn things around.

“We had to (turn it around),” said Cantwell. “Obviously two sloppy goals in the first half so we needed a reaction for the fans.

“It’s difficult, they go man-for-man so I had a friend for most of the game following me around.

“So listen, they’re a good enough side and I think at the end obviously Scott (Wright) has come on and we’ve got so much quality and players like that with a freedom he can go on and change the game for us and get two great goals.”

Rangers now head to Hearts on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Scottish Premiership season.
