Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday, boosted by technology shares that tracked overnight advances by their U.S. counterparts.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 410.21 points, or 1.07 percent, from Tuesday to 38,766.27. The broader Topix index was up 24.16 points, or 0.88 percent, at 2,755.11.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by electric appliance, rubber product and bank shares.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 156.51-54 yen compared with 156.39-49 yen in New York and 156.45-47 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0812-0816 and 169.22-31 yen against $1.0815-0825 and 169.19-29 yen in New York, and $1.0786-0788 and 168.75-79 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
