What Liverpool are really now thinking about buying Anthony Gordon from Newcastle

With just one game of the season to go, attention is now turning to Liverpool’s potential summer business.

The biggest news at Anfield over the summer is clearly the change in the dugout. It’s going to be fascinating to see Arne Slot take over from Jurgen Klopp.

But beyond that, there’s some tinkering that needs to be done to the first-team squad, too. No major surgery is needed, but Liverpool could just do with upgrading one or two key areas.

As part of that strengthening, it has been claimed that the Reds will be looking for a new wide forward to bolster their current options.

Strangely, one potential target is rumoured to be Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon. With Gordon having an excellent season on Tyneside, journalist Ben Jacobs has weighed in on whether Liverpool really could move to sign the former Everton winger.

What’s going on with Liverpool and Anthony Gordon

He may not be Liverpool supporter’s favourite player, but there’s no denying that Gordon has had a really good campaign.

With 10 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, the 23-year-old has also deservedly broken into the senior England squad.

As a pacy, direct goal-scoring wide player, Gordon could be just what Liverpool are looking for. Nevertheless, having been a high-profile former Everton player, a transfer feels quite unlikely.

And writing for The Daily Briefing, Jacobs claims that according to his information, the Reds are not planning on making a swoop for Gordon.

“Newcastle also don’t plan to sell Anthony Gordon despite recent links with Liverpool,” proclaims the journalost.

“And as far as I am told, there is actually no Liverpool interest either. It’s true Liverpool are planning for a wide attacker or winger. Leeds’ Crysencio Summerville is one name they have discussed, but targets are still being finalised.”

Is Crysencio Summerville a good alternative

With Gordon a bit of a non-starter, it’s interesting to see just where Liverpool will turn to for a wide signing.

Summerville is one who has been mentioned plenty already. Having won the Championship Player of the Season award with Leeds this year, he’s a fascinating option.

Predominantly playing off the left as a right-footer, the Dutchman looks like a potentially direct replacement for Luis Diaz.

It isn’t yet anything like certain that Diaz will depart this summer, but as links to PSG intensify, we might have to prepare for that eventuality.

Should that come to pass, the Colombian will need replacing. Gordon won’t be the man to fill that remit, but Summerville is definitely one to keep an eye on.
