'Wait and see': Eddie Howe now suggests £3m Newcastle star actually could play again this season

Newcastle United have a list of players who are out for the season, but one of Eddie Howe’s stars might not be on it anymore.

The likes of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are not going to play again until next season, having both suffered ACL injuries in March.

On top of that, Eddie Howe recently stated that Lewis Miley and Joe Willock are also out for the rest of the campaign, with Newcastle United opting to rest them with the view to them being fully fit and ready to go by the time pre-season starts.

And it sounded like we might not see Fabian Schar play for Newcastle again until pre-season as well.

Fabian Schar’s injury situation has been very confusing

The £3million defender picked up a hamstring injury during the 5-1 win over Sheffield United, and Eddie Howe stated after the game that his season could be over.

That was an alarming claim by Howe, and one that Schar quickly disputed. The 32-year-old told the Swiss media that he would be fine for the Euros, and would likely play for the Magpies again as well.

That is yet to come to fruition, but there appears to be a chance in Newcastle’s remaining two games.

What Eddie Howe has now said about Fabian Schar

That is because Howe has spoke about Schar during his press conference before the Manchester United game, and has suggested that the centre-back at least has a chance of being considered for selection.

“He’s working his way back,” he said.

“He’s in a mix at the moment between training and being with the medical staff. He’s making really good progress from his hamstring problem so we will wait and see if he is available for the game.”

Newcastle should start Emil Krafth anyway against Manchester United

Even if Schar is fit to feature, Howe should err on the side of caution and stick with Emil Krafth.

The Swedish defender has taken Schar’s place at centre-back, and has done very well. He is in excellent form and is finding his rhythm, which is why Howe should keep Krafth in his starting XI.

For Schar, it might be a bit of a risk to throw him into a high pressure game so soon after an injury. It might be better to keep him in reserve until we face Brentford, which could end up being an even bigger game depending on what happens at Old Trafford.

Schar will also have the Euros in the back of his mind, with Switzerland set to compete in Germany this summer. He will want to be part of that squad, but that might not happen if he rushes back from injury and suffers another setback.

While it would be great to have Schar back, Krafth is doing a good enough job in his absence. And he has already excelled against Manchester United once this season, so there is no doubt that he can do it again.
