'From what I've been told': Journalist reacts to Sunderland kit leak after recent Hummel announcement

Sunderland fans have been told their recent kit leak is ‘pretty accurate’.

Sunderland have been forced to wait months to see their new kit in recent years.

In fact, it had looked like the Black Cats would head into their first pre-season match of last summer against South Shields without an announcement.

While it is unclear when it will be officially unveiled this time round, the supporters have plenty to be excited about after it was confirmed that Hummel would return.

Last month, Sunderland announced that iconic supplier Hummel were making a comeback as their kit partner on a five-year deal.

They then went onto celebrate by releasing a limited range of two special edition items – a 1992 FA Cup final walk-out jacket and the 1993-94 yellow third shirt. These both sold out just hours after going on sale.

Sunderland’s latest kit leak

There has since been rumours floating around about what the 2024/25 kit would look like, with one photo emerging on the message boards this week.

After being shared on X, Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley replied: “From what I’ve been told this is pretty accurate!”

Hummel had a lot of expectations riding on their shoulders after their previous success on Wearside.

Though it wouldn’t take much for them to improve on what Nike and Adidas have produced over the years – with the 2017/18 shirt worn in the season Sunderland were relegated to League One standing out as particularly horrific.

The one problem with the 2024/25 shirt

This leak looks much smarter than previous kits though, and it appears that the badge is woven on – a huge improvement from those that seemed to fall off as it had just been stuck on.

The only major issue is the Spreadex Sports logo, which is a real eye sore on such a nice kit.

However, Spreadex have been the club’s partner since 2022 and will remain for just another season, so there is simply nothing that can be done about that for now. It is often that many sponsors will ruin the way a shirt looks, bar the likes of VAUX at Sunderland, Carlsberg at Liverpool and Sharp at Manchester United.

There has also been rumblings of the new away kit taking on a retro twist too, so fans could be preparing to open up their wallets if we are finally getting two quality shirts this season. Hopefully it is a sign of what is to come on the pitch.
