'Potential': Former Everton coach says Liverpool were looking at signing player who is now valued at £100m

According to a former Everton coach, Liverpool tried to sign a player years ago who is now on their radar again, and valued at £100m.

Liverpool are on the hunt for an attacker in the upcoming summer transfer window. With the uncertainty surrounding Luis Diaz’s future, it makes sense to invest in another forward.

Especially since Liverpool’s forward line has undoubtedly underperformed this season as well. The Reds’ star players just simply haven’t been up to scratch towards the end of the campaign in particular.

There will be a myriad of players on Michael Edwards’ list. But perhaps the most interesting one is someone who Liverpool could have signed years ago.

How Liverpool almost signed Anthony Gordon

One player who has been linked with a £100m move to Liverpool this summer is Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle United winger has enjoyed an excellent season, and he does seem like he would be a good fit for Liverpool.

But of course, he did have a long stint at the club’s arch rivals in Everton. The man who brought him to the club Neil Dewsnip has recently given an interview to BBC Sport, where he revealed even Liverpool wanted to sign Gordon back in his academy days.

“Anthony was my last signing at Everton. He was a boy we looked at a few times, as did Liverpool,” said.

“He was a little bit of a late developer, physically immature.”

Another former Everton coach, who wanted to remain anonymous for the BBC piece, also described how Gordon had a lot of potential.

“We could see he had potential,” he said. “The academy did well to stick with him. It was about being patient and keeping him in the system. In the past, players like Anthony might have been left behind but, as he got stronger, he came into his own.”

Would Anthony Gordon be a good signing for Liverpool?

Gordon certainly ticks a lot of boxes in terms of his speed and directness. He’s also relatively young and already an England international.

However, for the price he is valued at, Liverpool could probably find a better value for money in the market.

At this stage, it seems unlikely Liverpool would go all in for Gordon.
