'My game of all time': Jurgen Klopp names his favourite ever match as manager of Liverpool

After 490 matches in charge of Liverpool, only one now remains for Jurgen Klopp.

In amongst that near half-millennium of games there have been some absolute belters. Some of Liverpool’s best and most legendary matches have come under Klopp.

From the famous drubbings against Man United to the unexplainable magic of Barcelona at Anfield, Jurgen has seen it all.

With a difficult season last year and an ultimately underwhelming one this time around, those nights have become fewer and further between.

Nevertheless, disappointing as it ended up being, it sounds like the 2023/24 campaign gave Klopp his most enjoyable game in charge.

Jurgen Klopp names his ‘game of all time’

Liverpool have scored more than 1,000 goals during Klopp’s time in charge. Of the 490 matches, they’ve won 304. That’s a lot of good memories.

If you ask any supporter their favourite game under the German’s watch, you might get a few different answers. The Champions League semi-final against Barcelona will likely claim the majority though, with the following triumphant final perhaps a close second.

However, when asked about this season’s Carabao Cup final win in an interview with The Anfield Wrap, Klopp admitted that it was the game he’d enjoyed most during his whole career.

“What a night!” roared the 56-year-old. “That whole period was absolutely outstanding around that. We were brave but we had to be brave as well. It was not that we had five other players available and still throw in James [McConnell], Bobby [Clark], [Jayden] Dannsy, ‘come on, go’. But it was cool.

“It was really outstanding that night,” Klopp added. “I enjoyed a lot of games but in that specific way it was my game of all time. Because the team we had, the atmosphere in the stadium was absolutely crazy. Then you go again the full distance, then the goal, it was outstanding. I cannot remember a game that I enjoyed so much because it was really super special.

“Wining a trophy that night, looking in the eyes of the boys, everybody but especially the young boys, but everyone enjoyed it that way. Top class. Top, top, top.”

What else could Klopp have picked

We’ve had the privilege of seeing Liverpool play in some of the biggest games around under Klopp’s stewardship. Three Champions League finals, an FA Cup final, a Europa League final, three League Cup finals. The list goes on.

In amongst that there have been epic title battles, massive cup games and the odd run-of-the-mill thriller. Who could forget the 5-4 against Norwich City back in 2016, for example.

Klopp’s record against Liverpool’s rivals has been excellent as well. Everton fans would prefer to remember their last meeting with the boss no doubt, but he found some thrilling ways to win the Merseyside Derby over the years.

And although they often lost the wars with Man City, they won plenty of battles, too. The most memorable perhaps being the two Champions League quarter-finals in 2018.

But no, maybe his answer will change in the years ahead. For now though, Klopp seemingly prefers to remember the kids beating Chelsea’s ‘billionaire bottle jobs’ as his best match. We’re not going to argue with the big man.
