'The two best': Jamie Carragher says 'phenomenal' £55m Man City star is rubbing shoulders with Thierry Henry

Jamie Carragher believes one Manchester City player is now rubbing shoulders with Premier League legend Thierry Henry.

City ran out 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, and went top of the table by two points.

It was a huge result, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Stefan Ortega making a huge save from Heung-min Son towards the end. That led to Kyle Walker comparing him to Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer.

City didn’t play well, but the result was always going to be the only thing that mattered. City now take on West Ham United at home on Sunday, with Arsenal facing Everton at the Emirates. The task is simple – win the game, to win the league.

City fans are hoping there was no lasting damage to Kevin De Bruyne, after Pape Matar Sarr stood on his Achilles. De Bruyne did carry on for a little while but was later substituted.

De Bruyne helped City break the deadlock last night and after the game, Jamie Carragher made a big claim about the Belgian…

De Bruyne didn’t play particularly well last night, but he still came in clutch for the team with his 17th assist of the season.

It was a terrific ball across for Haaland after a great run into the half-space, and it is a connection we have seen plenty of times before.

De Bruyne has been missing for half the season because of that serious hamstring injury he suffered in the opening game against Burnley. But he has still made a huge contribution for City when he has played.

Carragher stated during the game that De Bruyne is the best passer of the ball the Premier League has ever seen.

And after the game had finished, the former Liverpool defender continued with his praise for the 32-year-old, making another big claim.

He said on the Gary Neville podcast: “He’s a phenomenal footballer. I actually think, we think of the great foreign players who have come to our league, Cantona, Zola, Bergkamp, David Silva, Ronaldo, all these players. I think the only persona who might have the slight edge is Thierry Henry.

“I think there’s them two and the rest are underneath. I do think he’s above all those players and it’s probably him and Thierry Henry as the two best.”

De Bruyne is in the same category as Henry

At this point it is not completely ridiculous to suggest that De Bruyne and Henry can be put together in the same kind of category.

For a long time, Henry has been seen by many as the greatest Premier League player of all-time. He was unplayable for Arsenal at times during the 2000s, and could score or assist as well.

£55 million signing De Bruyne can also assist at will, and has also chipped in with 68 goals in the competition which is a very respectable tally considering he is, first and foremost, a creator.

Like Henry, he is a footballer who is capable of doing magical and spellbinding things on the pitch and can take your breath away.

Perhaps he hasn’t quite surpassed the great Frenchman just yet, but he is most definitely rubbing shoulders with him at this point.
