How can Arsenal still win the Premier League title? What they need to happen on Sunday

Arsenal can still win the Premier League title in 2023/24, so Arsenal Insider has taken a look at what boss Mikel Arteta needs to happen on the last day to pip Manchester City.

The Gunners have taken the title race to the last day this season but head into Sunday as the underdogs. Manchester City enjoy a slender lead over Arsenal, which would see the Citizens also make history by becoming the first team to ever win four Premier League titles in a row.

Manchester United and Manchester City currently share the record for consecutive titles at three. The Red Devils lifted three on the spin from 1998/99 to 2000/01 plus 06/07 to 08/09. Pep Guardiola has taken the Citizens to the title from 20/21 to 22/23, and five of the last six.

Arsenal have not won the Premier League since Arsene Wenger secured their third title with the Invincibles in 2003/04. Their iconic manager also led the Gunners to the top of the table in 1997/98 and 01/02. Now, Arteta has a, albeit slim, chance to take Arsenal to another title.

So, with that in mind, Arsenal Insider has looked at what Arteta needs to happen on the last day of the 2023/24 campaign for Arsenal to win their first Premier League title in 20 years…

Arsenal must beat Everton on the final day of the Premier League season

Firstly, Arsenal must do their bit to have any chance of winning the 2023/24 Premier League title on the final day of the season. Everton visit Emirates Stadium to close out the campaign on May 19. The Toffees have nothing to play for in north London having secured their safety.

Everton have battled against the threat of relegation following two points deductions due to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). But the Blues visit the capital sat 15th in the table with Sean Dyche’s side also 14 points clear of the drop zone after a strong run of form.

Dyche has claimed four wins and a draw in Everton’s last five games ahead of facing Arsenal on Sunday. But the Gunners secured a 1-0 win at Goodison Park in September with Leandro Trossard scoring off the bench. He replaced Gabriel Martinelli following his hamstring injury.

Arsenal also beat Everton 5-1 and 4-0 the past two times the Merseyside natives visited the Emirates in May 2022 and March 2023. The Blues came to the capital on the final day of the 2021/22 season like they will this term and conceded five times to five different goalscorers.

Martinelli (27’ penalty), Eddie Nketiah (31’), Cedric Soares (56’), Gabriel Magalhaes (59’) and Martin Odegaard (82’) handed Emirates Stadium a party atmosphere as Arsenal and Everton closed out the 2021/22 season. Arteta will hope Arsenal enjoy a similar result this weekend.

Arsenal must beat Everton and hope Manchester City lose or draw to West Ham United

Arsenal can only win the 2023/24 Premier League title if they beat Everton. So, Arteta’s side must secure all three points on Sunday to stand any chance. The Gunners head into the final day of this season only two points behind Manchester City, who will host West Ham United.

A draw against Everton will not be enough for Arsenal to lift the title on goal difference even if West Ham win away to Manchester City. The north London giants hold a goal difference of +61 to the Citizens’ +60 over 37 fixtures. But Arsenal need West Ham to pull off a rare result.

West Ham have not beaten Manchester City in the Premier League home or away since the Irons won 2-1 at Etihad Stadium in September 2015. Man City have also won 13 of their 16 meetings since losing to the Hammers, including all seven of the fixtures at Etihad Stadium.

Additionally, the Irons’ one other win against Manchester City since September 2015 across all competitions through 19 meetings came in October 2021. West Ham beat the Citizens in a penalty shootout to settle an EFL Cup fourth-round tie after a 0-0 draw at London Stadium.

The EFL Cup shootout further marked departing West Ham manager David Moyes’ sole win against Guardiola ever. Moyes has met the Catalan 15 times since April 2014 but has lost 11 times and drawn three. Arsenal will hope West Ham see Moyes off in style with a rare result.

West Ham have confirmed that Moyes will leave the club after their trip to Manchester City on the final day. If West Ham take their first draw in four meetings or first win in six fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal also beat Everton, then Arteta’s team will win the title.
