Report: Southampton could now lose 'important' player even if promoted, he's held talks with PL club

Southampton will not be focusing on the summer transfer window too much just yet, with their crucial play-off semi-final second leg on Friday night.

However, that is not to say their players will not be the subject of interest whilst they are concentrating on trying to secure an instant return to the Premier League.

The two-legged tie against West Brom is finely poised, with the clubs playing out a 0-0 draw at The Hawthorns on Sunday.

Now, a fresh transfer update has emerged for a player who could yet have a huge say on whether Southampton achieve promotion.

Che Adams in talks with Premier League club

Che Adams has grown as the season has gone on and finished the regular Championship season with 15 goals and four assists in the league.

It is common knowledge that Adams’ Southampton contract is set to expire in the summer and the player has refused to commit his future to the club despite having a long-standing offer of a deal on the table.

The 27-year-old has been the subject of transfer speculation for each of the past four transfer windows, being linked with moves to the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace.

However, latest reports suggest the Scotland striker is in advanced talks with Wolves over a summer move.

According to Footballtransfers.com, talks between Adams’ representatives and the Molineux club are progressing positively and a move could happen following the conclusion of the Saints’ play-off efforts.

Adams is a player who is appreciated at Southampton, with his shortfalls in finishing at times compensated by his tireless work-rate and ability to bring others into play.

He has become increasingly important in the last months of the season and nothing emphasised his influence more than how blunt Southampton’s attack looked in the first leg against West Brom with him absent.

Adams had come of injured in the second-half of the final day win over Leeds United but manager Russell Martin had insisted at the time that the substitution was merely a precaution.

However, the fact he was not fit to make the squad at West Brom over a week later implies there was more to it than first thought.

Martin provided an update on Adams’ fitness after the game at The Hawthorns, confirming: “He’s been working. He’s been doing everything he possibly can.”

“We’ll get him on the training pitch in the next couple of days and then see how he reacts and adapts to that because he’s important.”

If Adams can recover to fire Southampton to the Premier League then he can leave for Wolves amicably with the best wishes of the St Mary’s faithful.
