‘That was really cool’: Alistair Johnston shares why the Celtic fans gave him ‘goosebumps’ this week

It certainly has been some week for the Celtic fans. A win in Saturday’s Glasgow Derby puts Brendan Rodgers within one point of winning the Scottish Premiership for the third season in a row.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Celtic fans have certainly played their part in taking the club to the cusp of being crowned champions.

Against Hearts, the Celtic fans generated an incredible atmosphere as the Hoops crushed the Edinburgh side in what was the performance of the season up to that point.

And in the Glasgow Derby on Saturday, the Hoops support once again turned on the noise to urge their side to yet another win over Rangers.

But it was neither of those events that left Alistair Johnston blown away this week.

Johnston hails ‘really special’ Celtic support

The Celtic Player of the Year Awards took place this week where the supporters got the chance to show their appreciation for their heroes and their hard work throughout this season.

And it was the atmosphere that the fans generated at the OVO Hydro that left Johnston with ‘goosebumps’.

Johnston said [Celtic TV], “That was amazing. Again, I think it’s been touched on by a couple of people, but there just can’t be many clubs in the world that can sell out an event like that for a Player of the Year awards.

“Some really special moments as well. Obviously, when you see Henrik Larsson go up and I don’t even think the crowd was gonna let anyone talk for another 10 minutes. They just kept chanting his name the entire time.

“That was like kind of goosebumps kind of stuff just because you can see how much people like that mean to this club and when you do give everything to this club how much those fans revere you.

“And I think that was a really special moment for him and for us players and it really kind of puts things in perspective how massive this club is, but how important it is to people’s lives as well.

“That was really cool for us current players to see that this really is a massive, massive club.”

After a difficult start to the season where the fans were locked out of Celtic Park and some opposing the appointment of Brendan Rodgers, the fans still remained true to the cause.

The undying and committed support has helped get Celtic to this point and there will undoubtedly be a superb turnout at Kilmarnock tonight to see their club continue to make history.

With automatic access to the Champions League group stages, this title is the most lucrative in the history of the Scottish game and the fans can be proud of the part they have played this season.
