A public meeting is to be held for the community to share their ideas for the future of their leisure centre.
Following the decision at last night’s Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) cabinet meeting (May 14) — for the council to remove its £5.5million funding offer for a new pool and seek to hand the centre’s operations back to the Southwell Leisure Centre trust by exiting the existing leisure centre lease — three councillors are to host a public meeting.
The pool saga has attracted significant interest and opinions from residents, and the meeting is set to be a chance for their ideas for the centre’s future to be shared.
Jeremy Berridge, Peter Harris and Karen Roberts will host the meeting at Southwell Rugby Club on Wednesday, May 22.
While all three are trustees, they will be acting only in their capacity as councillors at the meeting.
Jeremy Berridge stated: "At its cabinet meeting this Tuesday, NSDC confirmed that it did not intend to proceed with a new pool for the town but would seek to negotiate a surrender of its lease and exit its involvement in Southwell Leisure Centre. The trust notes this decision which NSDC is entitled to make and will be shortly be holding an urgent meeting to discuss the matter.
“In view of the substantial public interest in this issue, councillors Jeremy Berridge, Peter Harris and Karen Roberts have arranged a public meeting at Southwell Rugby Club at 7pm on Wednesday, May 22, to seek the views of the public on the future of the leisure centre as it returns back to the direct control of the town and they encourage as many residents as possible to attend."
It is not a meeting of, or promoted by, the Southwell Leisure Centre Trust or Southwell Town Council.
