King Charles fans find his new portrait 'disturbing' and 'off-putting'

The first official portrait of King Charles since his coronation last May has been unveiled, and although it seems to be a hit with the royal family, it’s a different story with fans.

King Charles took to the throne in September 2022, after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. His coronation was celebrated across the world in May 2023 and was attended by the royal family, including Prince Harry. Meghan Markle, and their two children, however, were not by his side. It’s another milestone moment for the King, as his portrait is unveiled, which comes days after Harry’s visit to the UK, where the two did not cross paths.

King Charles’ new portrait unveiled – but fans aren’t impressed

The painting, by renowned artist Jonathan Yeo was unveiled at Buckingham Palace yesterday. On the canvas, the monarch is painted wearing the red uniform of the Welsh Guards.

He also has a butterfly on his shoulder in the larger-than-life painting, which measures about 8ft 6in by 6ft 6in, with a sword in his hand.

Queen Consort Camilla was a huge fan of the work, as she told the artist: “Yes, you’ve got him.” Unfortunately, The same can’t be said for fans on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Anybody else find the new portrait of King Charles III incredibly disturbing and off-putting?” questioned one.

“Why is this the most terrifying portrait I’ve ever seen!” exclaimed another.

A third laughed: “If I received a painting of myself like this, I’d take it as a threat. Like it’s beautiful but nightmarish and ominous.”

However, not all had negative feelings towards the piece of art. “I know it seems odd but I so love it,” one tweeted.

The King reveals side effects of cancer treatment as he ‘heads back’ to public duties

Ever since announcing his cancer diagnosis at the end of the year, the monarch has taken a ‘step back’ from royal duties. However, he’s now attending many public engagements, the portrait unveiling being one of them.

The King is remaining open about his illness, providing the public with updates here and there. During a recent visit to Hampshire, the 75-year-old told a veteran who had previously undergone chemotherapy for testicular cancer, that he had lost his sense of taste.

During the visit, Charles handed over the role of colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps to Prince William, in their first public engagement together since 2022.
