The Iowa basketball program came into the transfer portal cycle of recruiting with two objectives. One was to land a point guard and they accomplished that last month. They were also looking to add a front court player and did just that with the addition of forward Seydou Traore, who was previously at Manhattan.
Traore is a 6-foot-7 forward who is originally from New York and just wrapped up his first year of basketball at the college level. In his freshman year, Traore averaged 11.8 points and 8.2 rebounds, along with averaging 1.3 blocks and shot 43.3% from the floor. If there is one knock it’s that this past season, he shot just 25% from three point range.
What was particularly impressive about Traore’s first year at the college level was his performance against high major programs. Manhattan played Kanas and UCONN this past season and Traore gave a good accounting of himself. Against the Jayhawks he scored 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Against the Huskies, he scored 13 points and again, reached 8 rebounds.
With this addition, Iowa now has filled 12 of their 13 scholarships. The Hawkeyes are currently waiting on a final decision from wing Payton Sandfort, who is currently competing at the NBA Combine in Chicago. Traore will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Iowa basketball program.
