It's official as West Ham's £37.1m final position in the table is confirmed

It’s official as West Ham’s final position in the 2023/24 Premier League table is confirmed and it’s worth £37.1m to club coffers.

There is intense focus on West Ham’s season finale at Man City this Sunday.

Not just because it is David Moyes’ last game as West Ham boss but more so its significance in deciding who wins the Premier League title.

Declan Rice said he left West Ham for Arsenal to compete for and win the biggest trophies around.

They don’t come much bigger than the Premier League.

So there is a delicious irony that the Hammers now very much hold Arsenal’s title hopes in their hands.

Going into the game the Gunners have been scratching around for a semblance of hope that West Ham would have significant motivation for the clash with Man City beyond professional pride.

Bad news for Arsenal

Individuals such as Jarrod Bowen will clearly be out to impress as he looks to guarantee a place in the England squad for the Euros.

Hopes tied to the fact it is Moyes’ farewell also look bleak as the Scot has already had his big leaving do last weekend.

Money was the next big factor Arsenal were hoping might motivate West Ham.

Because each Premier League position is worth around £3.1m in merit prize money. And West Ham still had the chance to finish above Man United in eighth and to fend off Brighton behind them in 10th.

Now that’s all been settled, though, and it might be more bad news for the Gunners.

West Ham finish ninth and bank £37.1m

Man United have beaten Newcastle United and Chelsea have recorded victory over Brighton.

As a result West Ham United have officially finished ninth in the 2023/24 Premier League table.

The Hammers, on 52 points, cannot catch Man United or Newcastle on 57, even with victory at Man City.

And Brighton, on 48 points, cannot catch West Ham.

According to Augustman and Football.London, that is worth £37.1m to West Ham in prize money.

That’s nearly £34m more than basement side Sheffield United.

It’s just over half the £62m West Ham’s opponents on Sunday Man City will earn should they beat the Hammers to lift a fourth consecutive title.

West Ham’s £37.1m merit cash will form part of what is expected to be a record £368m turnover for West Ham in their next accounts.

Prize money to help fund summer overhaul

That should leave the Hammers in a fantastic position with regards new PSR rules and strengthening the team and squad with a major overhaul needed.

West Ham also have the fourth lowest wages-to-turnover ratio, another key factor impacting spending.

Hammers fans will now be hoping incoming new manager Julen Lopetegui and technical director Tim Steidten are given as much as possible to spend on the team.

Moyes may have done an excellent job at the London Stadium.

But he has failed to future proof the West Ham squad which is the smallest and second oldest in the Premier League.

So there you have it West Ham fans. Moyes has led the club to a ninth place finish in the Premier League.

That leaves his league record at 16th in his first half season followed by sixth, seventh, 14th and now ninth.
