'That is shocking': Wayne Rooney slams £12m Newcastle player for what he just did vs Man United

Wayne Rooney has slammed one of Newcastle United’s players for what they did against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe’s side were tipped to beat Man United at Old Trafford, but were unable to pick up all three points from their trip to the North West. Newcastle United lost 3-2 to Erik ten Hag’s side, on what was a frustrating night.

The result massively dents the Magpies’ European hopes, and they will know that the first goal of the game was massively avoidable.

It came from Kobbie Mainoo, who had the freedom of Old Trafford after a pass from Amad Diallo. The teenager almost looked surprised at how much space he had, as he eased the ball beyond Martin Dubravka.

The amount of space Mainoo had suggested that he was offside, but that was not the case.

That was because Kieran Trippier played him onside, with the 33-year-old dropping off too much and not stepping up with his fellow defenders.

The £12million man’s mistake cost Newcastle, and Wayne Rooney was massively critical of the Toon defender’s efforts.

He spoke about Trippier’s role in Manchester United’s first goal on Sky Sports Main Event.

“I think we were quick enough to have a go at Casemiro for the goal against Arsenal but look at Trippier,” he said.

“He’s a defender, a full back, that is shocking. He has got to see Mainoo and protect your goal.

“I don’t know what he’s doing.”

Not good enough from Trippier against Manchester United

It really was shocking from Trippier, who should have done much better given his experience. It was a costly error on what was his return to Eddie Howe‘s starting lineup.

it was Trippier’s first start since March 2nd, back when Newcastle beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0. He picked up a calf injury on that day, and it led to him missing nine consecutive games.

But Trippier returned off the bench during the draw with Brighton, and was back in the starting XI against Manchester United. He replaced Tino Livramento, who will not play again this season due to an ankle injury.

On paper, it is great to have Trippier back, but his return did not have the desired effect at Old Trafford.

It was yet another costly error from the England international, who endured a torrid winter in black and white. He made a lot of mistakes earlier in the season, and admitted that he was not playing well enough.

This mistake was reminiscent of his form midway through the season, and it came at the worst possible time.
