Convicted Trump advisor Peter Navarro loses 'emergency' bid to shorten prison term

Former Trump administration trade adviser Peter Navarro just lost in court yet again.

According to CBS News' Scott MacFarlane, "Federal judge Amit Mehta rejects former Trump advisor Peter Navarro’s request for reduction of prison sentence in Contempt of Congress case."

“A four-month prison term without supervised release was warranted at the time of Defendant’s sentencing, and it remains warranted now,” stated Mehta in his decision.

Navarro was convicted of contempt of Congress for his repeated refusals to respond to subpoenas from the House January 6 Committee. He was one of two Trump allies to receive a similar conviction, the other being Steve Bannon.

After his conviction, Navarro repeatedly tried to get the sentence thrown out, only to be denied and be forced to report to prison earlier this year to serve out his sentence. He subsequently continued asking judges from prison to release him, pursuing this all the way to the Supreme Court, which refused to hear his request.

Following this, he made the request for "emergency release" last week. "Dr. Navarro’s term of imprisonment has been marred by the same political turmoil that gave rise to his prosecution," his defense stated. "He has been denied the opportunity to speak both with the press as well as a with Member of Congress. Indeed, when the Director of the Bureau of Prisons was asked about why a sitting Member of Congress could not speak to Dr. Navarro, he was informed that Dr. Navarro is, 'too notorious' to be interviewed."

Bannon, despite receiving the same sentence, has not yet begun serving his because of his own long string of litigation challenging the outcome of the case. The Justice Department this week asked U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols to lift the stay on Bannon being incarcerated, following his own losses in court on the issue.
