Municipal representatives to vote on Tesla German factory expansion

The relevant local authority was due to decide on the planned expansion of the Tesla factory site in Grünheide, near Berlin, on Thursday.

The representatives of the East Brandenburg community will first discuss the expansion and then make a decision at a meeting in the Hangelsberg district.

It was not clear ahead of the meeting whether they will agree to a slimmed-down expansion plan, with several community representatives believing the outcome is completely open.

Tesla wants to expand its site to build a goods station and storage areas - but this is controversial. Grünheide Mayor Arne Christiani pointed out that the majority of the main committee had agreed to a compromise on the expansion with less forest clearance.

Several initiatives have been opposing the plans for months, and activists have set up a protest camp in a forest neighbouring the factory.

Activists have said that they would continue to protest the expansion were the municipal representatives to vote in favour of it.
