Predicted Leeds United XI to face Norwich City: Two changes as £10.5m man returns, defensive switch made

Leeds United face the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final with Norwich City this evening.

The Whites will be looking to make use of home advantage after coming away from Carrow Road with a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Farke sprung a tactical surprise in his starting line-up at the weekend as Georginio Rutter – rather ineffectively – moved up front for the first time since December, with Archie Gray at number 10.

From a defensive standpoint, it was a change that paid off as Norwich struggled to create anything in the way of clear-cut chances. The problem was, neither did Leeds.

It would not be a surprise if Farke reverted back to a more attacking side tonight and so here is our predicted XI for the game.

Goalkeeper

Illan Meslier had nothing to do on Sunday but still managed to look nervous through a number of poor bits of distribution. He won’t be dropped, though.

Defence

Junior Firpo was impressive in keeping Jonathan Rowe quiet and would’ve been on the scoresheet had an extremely narrow offside call gone Leeds’ way. He starts at left-back.

Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon will continue in central defence with Sunday’s clean sheet having stopped the rot of nine goals conceded in three matches.

If Farke is to go with a more attacking setup, Connor Roberts should replace Sam Byram at right-back after another few days of full team training under his belt.

Midfield

Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara have seemingly found themselves as Farke’s first choice midfield pairing again after a brief period out of the side for the latter.

With 60 per cent possession, Leeds had considerably more midfield control at Carrow Road than in weeks gone by and so hopefully that will be the case again tonight.

Attack

With Roberts at right-back, and Kamara and Gruev in midfield, that unfortunately leaves no place for Gray in the starting line-up.

Patrick Bamford is still out and so Mateo Joseph should be the man who comes in but the likelihood is £10.5 million summer arrival Joel Piroe will instead. This is a massive game for him and he starts up front.

Rutter really struggled on Sunday but is unlikely to be dropped by Farke as he starts in the number 10 position, with Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville either side of him.

Dan James should be fit enough to get more than just the three minutes he managed off the bench in the first leg.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Roberts, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Gruev, Kamara; Gnonto, Rutter, Summerville; Piroe
