Man Utd have now broken an unwanted Premier League record set by Derby County in 2007/08

Manchester United have now broken an unwanted record that Derby County set in their infamous 2007/08 campaign.

Derby County are currently celebrating their first promotion in 17 years after returning to the Championship.

Owner David Clowes has completely transformed the club’s fortunes at Pride Park. He saved the club from impending doom when he tookover in July 2022 and the Rams have since enjoyed a successful spell.

In Paul Warne’s first season in charge, the club finished second in League One before the 51-year-old recorded his fourth promotion from the third tier this season as Derby finished second.

It’s arguably been the club’s most successful campaign since they were promoted to the Premier League in 2006/07, although their joy was short-lived on that occasion.

Derby’s miserable 2007/08 season saw them register the worst points total (11) in Premier League history, setting numerous records in the process.

Man Utd broke unwanted Derby County record from 2007/08

Only last month, Sheffield United erased one of Derby’s records from that infamous season having conceded more than 89 goals in a single campaign.

The Blades have since surpassed the 100-goal mark in what has been a miserable time in South Yorkshire.

Remarkably, that isn’t the only unwanted record that has been broken this season as one of the biggest clubs on the planet, Manchester United, have got in on the act.

Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a disastrous season, currently sitting in eighth position – but perhaps even worse – is how they’ve conceded more shots (631) than the Rams total of 630 from that campaign.

Derby supporters always try to erase that season from their memory but at least they can solace in the fact Man United have somehow faced more attempts than they did.

Derby County dream of reaching the Premier League

Having watched Ipswich Town win back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, others – such as Derby – will have gained inspiration from that highly impressive feat.

Remarkably, many people backed Ipswich to be battling near the top end of the Championship, though it’s still an enormous achievement.

The Rams will have different expectations next term as they are likely to be embroiled in a relegation battle. Most supporters would probably take a 21st-place finish right now, just to ensure they’re in the second tier.

But, as long as there is a clear plan to progress each season, there is no reason why Derby can’t scrap for promotion in the years that follow.

Clowes is an ambitious owner and won’t want to just rest on his laurels. Instead, he’ll be doing everything in his power to get his side back into the Premier League.

Then, the Rams could make amends for their disastrous campaign in 2007/08 and show they’re worthy of playing in the top flight.
