'Get rid of him': Journalist explains why O'Neil should sell £90k-a-week Wolves player this summer

Wolves have been urged to sell one player in the summer transfer window, as Gary O’Neil looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

A lot of changes must be made in the summer ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with attention soon to be turned to the transfer window as Gary O’Neil’s first season in charge at Wolves comes to a close.

The Old Gold have 90 minutes remaining of the challenging 2023/24 calendar, with a top-10 finish still possible if results go Wolves’ way on the final day.

That being said, O’Neil’s side will have to overcome Liverpool at Anfield in order to end the campaign on a high, a result that would crash Jurgen Klopp’s leaving party on Merseyside.

The fixture could mark the end of several players’ time at the club as speculation builds ahead of the summer transfer window, with Wolves now urged to sell one key player.

Gary O’Neil told to sell Pablo Sarabia this summer in the transfer window

While the likes of Pedro Neto, Joao Gomes and Rayan Ait-Nouri could generate Wolves the profit needed for O’Neil to rebuild his squad, the sale of a less in-demand player could also financially benefit the club.

Earning £90k-a-week, Pablo Sarabia is listed as Wolves’ highest earner, via Capology, picking up £4.6m annually after making the move from PSG to Molineux in 2023.

While a future sale of the Spaniard wouldn’t generate a high profit, considering the Premier League side acquired the 32-year-old for a mere £4.4m, saving on his wage costs is something for Wolves to think about, a belief shared by journalist Nathan Judah.

Speaking on the E&S Wolves Podcast, Judah admitted he would ‘get rid’ of Sarabia, whose future is in doubt ahead of the summer.

“Pablo Sarabia, one of those people who I can give or take really next season. I’ll be honest, I’d probably get rid of him.

“I think for the wage bill, I think he’s probably one of those who’s done pretty well this season, especially when everything was all guns blazing but I’ve been disappointed.

“I think he’s replaceable in this squad.”

Having contributed to 11 goals this season in 30 Premier League appearances, it’s not been a bad campaign for the former PSG forward however, recent performances would suggest that he is indeed replaceable in O’Neil’s system.

Pablo Sarabia could leave Wolves this summer

Perhaps if Sarabia’s wage demands were lower, his position at Molineux going into next season would be less questionable although, there are some doubts over whether the price to maintain the 32-year-old is justifiable.

In recent weeks, the Spaniard has been below-par, seeing his performances criticised as his experience failed to shine through when O’Neil’s attack was lacking quality due to an injury crisis.

Added to this, Sarabia hasn’t been the manager’s first choice throughout the season, having made 20 starts from 38 fixtures, averaging 59 minutes per game this campaign.

It will be interesting to see how the future of the Real Madrid academy product plays out at Molineux going into the summer, with his wage costs certainly an area that could be saved on ahead of the 2024/25 calendar.
