Six miners were wounded in a Russian shelling of a mine in the Donetsk region on Thursday, May 16, according to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry and Donetsk regional prosecutor's office.
"This morning, the enemy attacked the territory of one of the state-owned coal mining enterprises in Donetsk region. Six miners were wounded," the Ukrainian Energy Ministry says in a statement.
The shelling also damaged the building of the company's administrative and amenity complex. All the wounded are being provided with the necessary medical care.
According to the Donetsk regional prosecutor's office, at 10:45 a.m., the Russian occupation army fired, probably with Smerch multiple rocket launchers, at the village of Mykhaylivka, Pokrovsk district.
Russian shelling of mines in Ukraine
Russian troops are constantly shelling important enterprises in Ukraine, including mines. For example, in January 2024, two mines were cut off from electricity due to shelling. In October 2023, the Russian occupiers launched a missile attack on a mine in the Donetsk region.
After the occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in 2014, the Russian troops appropriated some coal mining enterprises. At the same time, as of March this year, in the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region, Russians began dismantling mine equipment and exporting everything cut out.
