Sooners baseball rolls into regular season finale series

It’s apropos Sooners baseball will finish the regular season with a weekend series that will include a doubleheader, starting Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Cincinnati. The second game of the series will be approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

It’ll be the sixth weekend doubleheader of the year for Oklahoma and the fifth (!) in conference play. It swept doubleheaders against Wright State, Central Florida and Baylor. Texas and West Virginia each swept OU in doubleheaders after losing the Friday night opener in each series. Big Bread, Big Dairy, amirite?

It has been a strange start to the final week of the season for Oklahoma. OU arrived in Cincinnati on Monday afternoon. But the Sooners have yet to play a game after the midweek game at Xavier was canceled Tuesday. There will be no makeup date.

The good news is Skip Johnson’s club heads into the final weekend of the regular season in a comfortable spot. The school’s first regular season title and the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big 12 Tournament in Arlington has been secured.

The focus over the next week and a half will be spent on chasing a top-8 national seed. That would secure a regional and super regional at L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark. Postseason baseball *should* return to the Dale for the first time since 2010.

SPIKERMAN, SOONERS OFFENSE ROLLING

Quite simply? Oklahoma’s offense is rolling. Last weekend the Sooners offense racked up 47 runs against Baylor, hitting .412 as a team with 16 extra-base hits and a pair of grand slams. Oklahoma leads the conference in team batting average (.326). That has played a large part in the Sooners winning 13 of its last 15 conference games.

John Spikerman heads into the regular season finale following his best series of the year, earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The junior outfielder hit .643 vs. Baylor with five extra base hits and 10 RBI. That included his first-career grand slam in a 9-1 win in the second game of the series.
