Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy states that Ukraine needs modern air defense systems, particularly two Patriot systems, for more effective defense of Kharkiv, according to his interview with ABC News.

"The situation is very serious. We cannot afford to lose Kharkiv. All we need are two Patriot systems. Russia will not be able to occupy Kharkiv if we have those," he stated.

Responding to the question of who is to blame for the new escalation in the Kharkiv direction, Zelenskyy said that the entire world is to blame.

"It’s the world’s fault. They gave the opportunity for Putin to occupy. But now the world can help," he said.

Situation in the Kharkiv direction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held an off-site meeting of the National Security and Defense Council in Kharkiv on May 16. The President stated after the meeting that the situation is complex, and currently, the command is reinforcing the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine concentrated in this direction.

According to the latest data, following the start of the Russian advance in the Kharkiv region on May 10, the Ukrainian military managed not only to stabilize the situation but also to conduct counterattacks against the enemy's positions in the Vovchansk area.

At the same time, the Russian forces continue to shell populated areas located near the border with the Russian Federation. Moreover, the occupiers are taking local residents hostage. A case of civilian shooting has also been recorded.
