‘Really entertaining’: Marc Priestly thinks out-of-contract 170-race driver still has a ‘lot to offer’ in F1

Watching and enjoying Formula 1 is about more than just concentrating on who’s going to win each Grand Prix.

Thankfully that’s the case, otherwise, the domination of Max Verstappen over the past few seasons would have turned millions of fans away.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Marc Priestley has been talking about one driver who has never tasted victory in F1 but still provides a lot of value to the sport.

Verstappen has frequently driven off into the distance in the past couple of seasons meaning the battles further down the grid have had to provide the entertainment to fans.

There have been some great battles this season, with Martin Brundle left stunned by the two Alpine drivers racing side-by-side on the opening lap in Miami.

Priestley has now said that Haas driver Kevin Magnussen still has plenty to offer the sport.

Magnussen is one of several drivers on the grid who doesn’t currently have a contract for next season.

He’s under pressure at Haas with several other drivers aiming to take his place.

Marc Priestley thinks Kevin Magnussen still has a lot to offer in F1

It’s safe to say that the Miami Grand Prix didn’t go entirely to plan for Kevin Magnussen.

He found himself in a tense battle with Lewis Hamilton in the Sprint Race and while the Brit eventually got past him, he picked up a host of time penalties and some penalty points due to leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

Magnussen said after the race that he was protecting teammate Nico Hulkenberg who was running in the points, but those comments didn’t go down too well with Haas.

In the Grand Prix, he made contact with Logan Sargeant and ended his race, picking up more penalty points which have brought him very close to a ban.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu is said to be less than convinced about offering the Dane a new contract.

However, Priestley believes that Magnussen still has plenty to offer as one of the sport’s most entertaining drivers.

Kevin Magnussen needs to convince Haas to give him 2025 contract

Speaking about the 31-year-old and his future, Priestley said: “Haas are looking less and less likely to retain Kevin Magnussen for 2025.

“Now, you can agree or disagree with that, I think Kevin Magnussen’s a really entertaining driver.

“I think he’s got a lot of offer this sport as he has done for the last few years and I think has still got time to run.

“But, if you’re looking at the next few years in the future of a team like that who just seem to be on the up a little bit, maybe Kevin doesn’t represent the future.”

Magnussen has admitted that – much to the dismay of Priestley – he is yet to receive a concrete offer from Haas.

Several drivers could be in line to replace the Danish driver at Haas next year.

Oliver Bearman looks very likely to be a Haas driver next year and will take part in FP1 for the team for the first time this season at Imola.

Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu is one of the favourites to potentially take Magnussen’s seat.

And even under pressure, Williams star Logan Sargeant has instructed his manager to speak to the team.

Magnussen certainly isn’t the worst option available to Komatsu and Gene Haas, but he needs to do more to convince the team that he’s the best driver to take the team forward.
