Former Derby County boss has now 'turned down' managerial role at Championship rivals - journalist

A former Derby County manager has just turned down the opportunity to manage a Championship rival.

David Clowes has made some great decisions during his time as owner but none more so than the decision to hire Paul Warne in September 2022.

The 51-year-old was the right man to join Derby at the time. The Rams were hamstrung by EFL spending restrictions, meaning they couldn’t spend a fee on any player in the transfer window and Warne knows League One like the back of his hand.

Having achieved three promotions on a shoestring budget at Rotherham United previously, there was confidence that he could add a fourth with Derby. It took him till his second season – after narrowly missing out on the playoffs in his first – but Warne became the first manager at Pride Park to win promotion in 17 years.

It’s a massive achievement and one that perhaps wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t replaced Liam Rosenior with him.

What Liam Rosenior has done after leaving Derby County

Rosenior was Wayne Rooney’s assistant at Derby and held that position from January 2021 until he was named interim manager in June 2022.

The club never saw the 39-year-old as a long-term option – despite winning seven of his 12 League One games in charge – but he did prove his worth after leaving the club.

Hull City chairman Acun Ilicali chose to appoint Rosenior in November 2022. He arrived when the Tigers had the worst defence in the division and were staring down the barrel at relegation, but he turned their fortunes around and delivered a 15th-place finish.

With easy-on-the-eye, possession-based football that gained plaudits from the wider footballing world, Rosenior dragged Hull to a seventh-place finish in his first full season in charge, but that wasn’t enough to keep his job.

Ilicali controversially sacked the former Brighton defender, claiming their vision for the club didn’t align and the Turkish TV mogul wanted to see more attacking football.

Rosenior is now on the lookout for another job in management having recently rejected one of Derby’s Championship rivals.

Liam Rosenior rejects Plymouth Argyle proposal

According to Alan Nixon [via Patreon], Rosenior has turned down the chance to manage Plymouth Argyle.

The Pilgrims confirmed their Championship survival on the final day and the move for the highly-rated manager was an ambitious one.

Nixon has confirmed that Rosenior has attracted other interest since his surprise departure from East Yorkshire, so the Englishman is perhaps weighing up his options.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up as it’s likely a second-tier club will snap him up and Derby will come up against him next season.
