Aston Villa could now do something they've never achieved in Premier League history v Crystal Palace

Aston Villa could make another little slice of history if they manage to beat Crystal Palace in their final game of the Premier League season.

Unai Emery has overseen an incredible season at the Villa Park side, with a run to the Europa Conference League semi-final followed by Champions League qualification being confirmed earlier this week.

Aston Villa were unable to beat Liverpool on Monday night to achieve fourth spot in front of their own supporters despite a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down to draw 3-3.

However, The Villans had their Champions League status confirmed on Tuesday night as Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-0 to Manchester City.

Thankfully, that saves everyone associated with the club a nervy end to the season on Sunday.

The game is far from meaningless, though, with Villa having the opportunity to do something they have never done in the Premier League.

Aston Villa have never done Premier League double over Crystal Palace

That is because Villa have never completed a Premier League double over Crystal Palace.

In fact, Villa have been unable to complete a league double over Palace since the 1980/81 season, when they won 1-0 at Palace before being 2-1 victors at home.

Emery’s side beat the Eagles 3-1 at Villa Park way back in September of this campaign, having been 1-0 down until Monday night’s hero Jhon Duran scored in the 87th minute.

That was followed by a 98th-minute Douglas Luiz penalty and 101st-minute Leon Bailey strike to secure a dramatic win.

That late flurry means Villa now have a great opportunity to secure their first Premier League double over Sunday’s opponents.

Palace sit a comfortable 12th in the league with one game to go and could finish as high as tenth or as low as 14th depending on the final day results.

Things could have been very different as they were struggling under Roy Hodgson before Oliver Glasner took over in the dugout in February.

So far, it has proven to be an inspired decision as the German has got his side playing with a freedom you would not usually associate with Palace, even when they were without the injured duo of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise.

Palace are on a run of five wins in their last six games, drawing the other, so Villa will be grateful they don’t have to travel to Selhurst Park knowing they have to get a win to secure a Champions League place.

That being said, Emery will be keen to finish on a high in a season that has been full of them and secure a first ever Premier League double over Palace in the process.
