'A player Gary O'Neil really likes': Wolves have 'confidence' of signing 16-goal target - transfer expert

Wolves are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, with one target from last summer re-emerging as a player Gary O’Neil could finally acquire.

With 90 minutes of the 2023/24 campaign remaining, Wolves will be hopeful of ending the season on a high with a look towards the summer transfer window.

The window will be a crucial part of the development of Gary O’Neil’s squad beyond his first term at Molineux, with the addition of depth to the side imperative ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The Englishman has already fired a warning at Wolves owners Fosun, who were unable to sanction a move for a striker in January, leaving the Old Gold’s front line extremely limited on resources amid an injury crisis.

Now, it looks as though the manager may finally get his wish of adding a new forward to his squad this summer, with Southampton striker Che Adams a player of interest at Molineux.

Transfer expert says Wolves are confident of securing Che Adams this summer

Last summer, Adams was a player admired by Wolves, however, the time was not right, with a similar narrative following into the January window.

Speaking exclusively to Molineux News, HITC journalist Graeme Bailey assured that the Old Gold are now confident of capturing the Scotsman’s signature this summer, as he prepares to become a free agent.

“The confidence is that Wolves are getting him on a free. They’ll want to get business done early, we know he’s a player that Gary O’Neil likes.

“Even if Southampton go up I think he’s leaving.”

The 27-year-old has scored 16 goals in 40 Championship appearances this season, playing his part in pushing the Saints to the playoffs in the bid to see Russell Martin’s side bounce straight back up to the top flight.

There’s no doubting the quality that Adams possesses on his day in front of goal however, Bailey insisted that he sees the Scotland international’s potential role at Molineux being about more than just putting the ball in the net.

Gary O’Neil likes Che Adams, he could be what Wolves need

In his Premier League career, Adams’ numbers are less glamorous although, the fundamentals are there for the Southampton man to become the missing piece of O’Neil’s front line.

The Scotland international has 25 top-flight goals to his name in 124 appearances, a player who could bring experience of the league to Wolves to bolster the depth, a plan echoed by transfer expert Bailey.

“He’s not better than Hwang I don’t think but he just gives some real depth, which I think Wolves are missing.

“They’re not missing that much quality, he’s not going to rival Cunha at any moment in time but he can play all over the place, he can play in a front three, he can play wide.

“He just offers some real depth, he’s a good Premier League player and I think the counter-attacking football O’Neil plays, he can do a good job for them and I think he [O’Neil] thinks he can improve him as well.”

This season, Wolves have had to test the water with a number of academy talents due to being so short on depth, with the likes of Nathan Fraser and Leon Chiwome showing that they are not yet at the level needed to compete in the Premier League.

An interesting element to Bailey’s comments surrounds the belief that the manager could improve the forward, something that has been seen at Molineux this season with the boss’ relationship with Matheus Cunha.

The Brazil international was lacking confidence when he first arrived at Wolves and has since found his feet under the manager’s guidance, recording his highest-scoring tally throughout his career, via Transfermarkt.

In signing Adams on a free transfer, O’Neil would acquire an experienced goalscorer in the top flight, and a player capable of being called upon to provide a presence in the box, with there also being room for improvement.
