‘He’s been pivotal’: Nedum Onuoha says £35m Man City star is a ‘huge’ player for the team

Nedum Onuoha has named one Manchester City player he thinks has been absolutely vital in recent years.

After winning the Treble last season, the Citizens could now end this campaign with another Premier League and FA Cup if they beat West Ham United this Sunday and then Manchester United at Wembley Stadium next week.

Now though, one pundit and former City player has heaped praise on one particular figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad, who he thinks has been a vital part of the club’s successes.

Speaking in a recent livestream on the club’s YouTube channel ahead of their recent 2-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, Onuoha said this when asked about Ederson and how important he is for the team.

He said: “He’s class. I think he’s got such a huge presence as well and he steps up in those biggest moments.

“As we look back on almost a year [since] the Champions League final, those last 20, 30 minutes, who was the most important player for City? It was Ederson.

“I think some of the decision-making, some of the saves he makes, I think his composure as well, that can really set the tone.

“I think in terms of the way City have played as a football team, he’s been pivotal to that. I think without his ability to be able to put his foot on the ball, play shorter passes, trust himself to play medium ones, longer ones as well, he’s not a one-trick pony, he does everything really well.

“To know that you’ve got somebody who is that consistent, that brave, because he takes some collisions, it’s a huge part of why City have been successful.”

Ederson has been a top signing for City

Since joining the Manchester club back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Benfica in a deal worth £35m, the goalkeeper has gone on to make 332 appearances in all competitions.

Across those games, the Brazilian has kept 155 clean sheets and won numerous trophies along the way.

This isn’t the first time Ederson has been highlighted for how important he is as Bernardo Silva said earlier this month that the way the goalkeeper helps build up play from the back and make key saves is crucial to how the rest of the team can play.

With all of that in mind, no one can deny how much of a top signing the Brazil international has been for the club and how much of an impact he’s had in their success under Guardiola.
