Former Manchester United loanee nearing a dream move to his boyhood club

A former Manchester United man appears to be in with a very real chance of securing a dream move to his boyhood club this summer.

At least, that is the view of his agent, the one-time Old Trafford forward likely to leave his current employers during the upcoming transfer window and hoping to finally don the colours of the team he used to watch from the stands, when a future as a professional footballer was still very much a hopeful glint in his eye.

“I do have contact with him,” Joseph Oosting, the highly-rated head coach of Eredivisie high-flyers FC Twente, told Studio Voetbal a fortnight ago.

Oosting worked a youngWout Weghorst at Emmen a decade back, and swung open the doors to a reunion in Enschede.

“(Have we spoken) about a transfer to Twente? That too, yes,” the coach adds. “He is a boy from the region. I would like to see him join FC Twente.”

Wout Weghorst nearing dream move

Both Oosting and Weghorst could see their ambitions become reality, too.

A year-and-a-half since the Dutch international joined Manchester United on a short-term loan deal from Burnley, Weghorst is still technical a Clarets player. But, having not represented Burnley since before Vincent Kompany took over at Turf Moor in 2022, it would be a massive surprise if this old-school throwback of a targetman was leading the line in the Championship next term.

As Weghorst’s agent informs Voetbal International, the 31-year-old has just over 12 months left on his contract.

Burnley will not stand in the way of their £12 million forgotten man either, with Simon Cziommer joining Oosting in talking up the chance of the Borne-born striker putting pen to paper with the club he supported in his youth.

“There is a buy-out clause in his contract,” the agent explains, albeit without spelling out the numbers involved.

“Wout only has a one-year contract left. I can’t imagine that (Burnley) would want to keep him for a year and then let him leave on a free transfer. But I say that without having spoken to the club.

“He thinks (FC Twente) is a fantastic club, just like me. I was able to play for them. Twente is my home. That’s how it feels for Wout, who used to be in the stands as a supporter.”

Weghorst Burnley career looks over

Weghorst scored only twice for Man United. But it should not be forgotten just how integral he was to Marcus Rashford‘s stellar form, assisting the Carrington graduate’s clincher in that EFL Cup final victory over Newcastle at Wembley.

Now back in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, the one-time Wolfsburg talisman has found goals easier to come by in his latest loan deal, having also represented Turkish giants Besiktas after falling out of favour in Lancashire.
