'Had lost his shape': Daniel Farke says Leeds player was playing 'badly' before 4-0 win over Norwich

Daniel Farke has discussed Georginio Rutter’s dip in form over the last few weeks after Leeds United cruised past Norwich City to win 4-0, with Rutter shining for Farke’s side.

Rutter has been up there with Leeds‘ best players this season, starring in attack and clocking up his 50th appearance for The Whites on Thursday night as Leeds secured a place at Wembley in the play-off final.

He has had a hand in 26 goals this season and is often the man laying on the pass before an assist. But before his right-footed strike, which saw Leeds go 3-0 up, he failed to score or create for nine games.

Rutter underwent a minor hernia operation during the March international break and it has been said that perhaps, that has been holding the club’s record signing back somewhat over the last couple of months.

But on Thursday night, Rutter won the man of the match award with a quite brilliant display and scoring his eighth goal of the season. Farke spoke about his lack of form, in his post-match press conference.

Here is what the Leeds manager said, following the huge 4-0 win at Elland Road:

Farke comments on Rutter’s lack of form for Leeds of late

Rutter’s dip in for has coincided with Leeds going from a real contender to finish in the top two and even win the Championship, before dying off and having to contend with the play-offs and Norwich City.

Rutter seemed to put that dismal run of form behind him on Thursday night, holding the ball-up superbly and getting involved more and more. The striker’s confidence looked as though it has been restored.

He won the man of the match award and Farke spoke after the game, explaining that he had done well in training but performed “badly” in games but that he has always back Rutter to shine for the Whites.

“I was careful before the game. Two or three times he looked good in training and played badly in games. Had lost his shape. He has had such a great season. Unlucky at Norwich, but did his job against the ball.

“As long as you work that hard to help the team, we will always back, support him. One of our key players. Not like I don’t back him in our 48th game. Our key players need our backing to win their rhythm back.”

Leeds fans were all saying the same thing about Joel Piroe

Like Rutter, Piroe’s form has dipped albeit perhaps on a larger scale compared to Rutter with the Dutchman losing his place in the side due to the form of Patrick Bamford from January onwards.

But on Thursday night, PIroe starred as he scored his 14th goal of the season with a well-placed header after a gorgeous cross from Willy Gnonto to double Leeds’ lead after Ilia Gruev’s clever free-kick.

A fourth went in from Crysencio Summerville. Fans reacted to PIroe’s display by saying that it was his best since his £16m move from Swansea. It was a night in which Leeds, Rutter and Piroe got back to their best.
