Liverpool 'really like' £45m player who scored against them this season, he idolises Mo Salah - Ornstein

Liverpool are already beginning to position themselves for the summer transfer window.

By the time Sunday evening rolls around, that will be it for another season. With Jurgen Klopp out the door and no more games left to play, full focus will be on the market.

For some, this is the best time of the year. The pressures of the campaign removed, fans can get stuck into all the gossip that transfer season inevitably brings.

As ever, things have started early this year. The Reds have already been reported to be looking to add a wide forward to their first-team squad.

The man who delivered that news was journalist David Ornstein. And the prominent reporter has now fleshed out a little on his claim.

David Ornstein delivers Anthony Gordon update

There won’t be too many who would disagree that Liverpool need to bolster their forward line again this summer. While the current crop have scored a decent amount this year, they’ve missed too many more.

Attacking additions are also always the most exciting for fans. These are the players who are going to get bums off seats after all.

With that in mind, there has been some chatter going around that Liverpool could be about to make an audacious move for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon.

A Scouser by birth – and one who Liverpool have been sniffing around during his Everton past – Gordon has had a really good season. He even scored against the Reds, bagging the opener at St James’ Park before Darwin Nunez stole the show with a late double.

But asked during a Q&A with The Athletic whether Liverpool moving for Gordon was a possibility, Ornstein said that while the Reds do like him, it probably isn’t going to happen.

“Liverpool (like Manchester City and many others clubs) really like Gordon, Ian,” the journalist responded. “But they are not expected to pursue the winger because Newcastle have no intention of letting him go and, even if that stance was changeable, the potential level of fee it would take to do business would be astronomical. I’m certain Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer.”

Is Anthony Gordon worth Liverpool’s attention

Had this idea been floated 12 months ago, it would have been laughed out of the room by supporters. Gordon hadn’t exactly set the world alight following a £45m move from Everton to Newcastle in January 2023.

Fast forward through the season though, and the 23-year-old has really come into his own.

11 Premier League goals and 10 assists is a decent enough tally by anyone’s books. As well as that goal against Liverpool, Gordon now has Champions League experience and is a full England international.

As it happens, he’s also a big fan of Mohamed Salah. Speaking to TNT Sports this January, Gordon claimed that he watches tons of clips of Liverpool’s Egyptian King and believes him to be the best player in the world.

Ornstein is right, though. Although Newcastle seemingly need to offload a big player or two this summer, we think their asking-price will be a little rich for Liverpool’s blood. Not this year then, but we think it’d be wise to keep an eye on Gordon for the future.
