'To be fair': James Maddison admits one Manchester City player was 'fantastic' v Tottenham in midweek

Tottenham Hotspur will bring another rollercoaster Premier League season to an end on Sunday when they head to Sheffield United on Sunday.

Spurs will secure fifth place in the table – and Europa League qualification – if they get at least a point against the already-relegated Blades.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will look to get the job done when they host West Ham on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s charges need just one point to win the title.

However, even though the Lilywhites lost to Man City, they played well in a new system which saw Pape Matar Sarr pushed forward in a false 9 role.

James Maddison, speaking to the official Tottenham website, praised the new system and said he felt Spurs could’ve got something from the game.

However, Maddison admitted that Man City substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega pulled off “fantastic” saves on the day and kept Tottenham at bay.

What did Tottenham midfielder James Maddison say about Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega?

Maddison said: “There were spaces, pockets out there and I felt we were getting success with the system, and we could have won the game, which is frustrating,” he said.

“We had some big moments, even when we were down in the game. Sonny’s was probably the best of our chances.

“But what a fantastic save by the keeper who, to be fair, has come on as sub and produced a couple of good saves, to be fair, one with Deki as well.

“So credit to him, it’s not easy to come off the bench like that and produce those saves when you are cold.”

Ortega came on in the 69th minute after Ederson had to be taken off after suffering an eye injury.

The 31-year-old made an incredibly impressive cameo against a dangerous Spurs side intent on upsetting the hosts and keeping their Champions League chase alive.

With Ederson having been ruled out for the rest of the season, Ortega is now expected to feature against West Ham and also in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
