'Very good chance': Graeme Bailey offers update on Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle

Newcastle United are doing all they can to keep Alexander Isak at St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old has been one of Newcastle United‘s best players this season, enjoying the best campaign of his career with 23 goals in all competitions.

Alexander Isak looks like a real superstar, and well worth the club record fee of £63million that the Magpies paid for him in 2022. He is an elite goalscorer, and someone who other clubs wish they had.

One of those clubs is Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta interested in signing Isak after failing to land him when he was at Real Sociedad.

But the Gunners could be out of luck. Newcastle do not want to sell, nor does Isak want to leave. And the club are taking steps to protect one of their most valuable assets.

The latest on Alexander Isak’s contract situation

Newcastle United are hoping that Isak will sign a contract extension at St James’ Park on improved terms, and TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about where negotiations are currently at.

“Alexander Isak’s contract situation is ongoing,” he said.

“Newcastle are hopeful that it gets over the line sooner rather than later. Sometimes it is the finer details that can be tough to go over.

“By the start of next season, will Isak be Newcastle’s highest earner? I think there’s a very good chance he is.”

Bruno Guimaraes is currently Newcastle United’s highest earner, having signed a new deal with the club last year. He now earns £160,000-a-week to play for the Magpies, but Bailey believes that Isak’s new wage could eclipse that figure once he inks an improved deal with the club.

Newcastle United also planning to keep Anthony Gordon

The club have no plans to sell Bruno or Isak, and the same goes for Anthony Gordon.

The 23-year-old has been the Magpies’ best player this season, boasting 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League. He has been absolutely outstanding, proving a lot of people wrong as he begins to reach his potential.

And that is why he is attracting admiring glances too, with Liverpool linked with signing Gordon this summer and bringing him back to Merseyside.

However, that story has been played down to Geordie Boot Boys by Bailey.

“That was quickly laughed off by all parties,” he said.

“It was not taken particularly seriously. He is one of the unsellable players alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.

“Newcastle really like him a lot and he’s not going anywhere. And he’s very happy too and has no desire to leave at the moment.”
