Report: David Ornstein says Man City ‘really like’ £45m Newcastle United player - it's not Bruno Guimaraes

David Ornstein has said that Manchester City are big admirers of one of Newcastle United’s star players.

The Manchester club have a track record when it comes to signing players from fellow Premier League clubs in recent years.

For example, during the previous summer transfer window, the Citizens signed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea and Matheus Nunes from Wolves.

Now though, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding another current top-flight player the Blues apparently have their eyes on.

In a recent online Q&A with The Athletic, Ornstein was asked by a user if there is any truth in the recent reports claiming Liverpool have an interest in signing Anthony Gordon.

In response, Ornstein had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Liverpool (as with Manchester City and many other clubs) really like Gordon. But they are not expected to pursue the winger because Newcastle have no intention of letting him go.

“Even if that stance became changeable, the potential level of fee it would take to do business would be astronomical.

“I’m certain Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer.”

After emerging through Everton’s youth ranks and going on to score seven goals and deliver eight assists in 78 senior appearances for the club, the winger joined Newcastle in the 2023 January transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £45m.

Since then, the 23-year-old has made 64 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side across all competitions, finding the back of the net 13 times and supplying 11 assists.

Gordon has had an impressive season with Newcastle

In 35 Premier League appearances this season, Gordon has racked up more shots at goal (80), progressive carries (138), shot-creating actions (143) and goal-creating actions (29) than any other Newcastle player.

With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why City, who have also been linked with a move for Bruno Guimaraes in recent weeks, and other Premier League clubs admire the Englishman.

However, with Ornstein claiming that a move away from St. James’ Park for Gordon this summer looks impossible at the moment, we feel that no City fans should get their hopes up about seeing the winger join Pep Guardiola’s side anytime soon.
