£40m Newcastle United star has not been spotted in training ahead of Brentford game

Newcastle United have provided a training ground update ahead of their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday.

The Magpies are heading down south to take on Brentford, knowing that a win will give them a chance of qualifying for Europe next season. But they will be relying on other results no matter what. Newcastle need Chelsea to lose to have any chance of coming sixth, while they also need Manchester City to win the FA Cup for seventh to result in a Europa Conference League place.

It is all on the line, with Newcastle’s fate no longer in their own hands after a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Manchester United during the week.

It was the latest in what has been a season full of setbacks, and now Eddie Howe needs one more response from their players before their competitive campaign comes to an end. Win, lose or draw, Newcastle will be on a plane after the Brentford game heading to Australia for a couple of post-season friendlies, much to the frustration of some of the Toon players.

But they were all smiles in training ahead of the trip to Brentford based on the gallery the club have uploaded to their official website.

They have released 25 photos of the players preparing to take on Brentford, with Eddie Howe making sure his squad is up for the challenge that is coming their way on Sunday.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Joelinton were spotted, but there were a couple of Newcastle first-team players who did not feature in the photos.

Anthony Gordon and Callum Wilson do not feature in Newcastle training pictures

The first one to note is Anthony Gordon, who is described as a doubt to face the Bees this weekend. He is still feeling the effects of Sofyan Amrabat’s challenge on him that shockingly did not result in a penalty being awarded at Old Trafford.

There is also no sign of Callum Wilson, who has missed Newcastle’s previous two games due to illness.

Despite not being spotted, Howe has said that he is expecting the 32-year-old to be available for selection.

You would like to imagine Gordon will be good to go as well, as he ends a season that has seen availability be one of his strongest assets. The £40million man has only missed two games all year, both of which were due to suspension.

Despite picking up so many bumps and bruises, Gordon has shown incredible resilience, and we expect that to continue away to Brentford.
