Sheffield Wednesday fans had plenty to say after the club announced retained list

Sheffield Wednesday have announced their retained list ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Sheffield Wednesday have let go the likes of Tyreeq Bakinson, Ciaran Brennan, George Byers, Juan Delgado, Lee Gregory, and Reece James who only joined the Owls last summer.

But the Owls have also offered new deals to club captain Barry Bannan, as well as Cameron Dawson, Di’Shon Bernard, Dominic Iorfa, Liam Palmer, Will Vaulks and Josh Windass.

The club also announced that options have been taken up on both Marvin Johnson and Callum Paterson to keep them at the club for next season.

Sheffield Wednesday fans react to retained list

The player that’s drawn the most attention is Byers; the midfielder leaves Sheffield Wednesday as a fan favourite following three seasons at Hillsborough, 78 appearances and 14 goals.

He played a key role in the promotion-winning campaign scoring six and assisting three more, but he couldn’t really prevail under Rohl.

Byers was often hauled off at half-time or soon after before being sent out on loan to Blackpool, where he earned impressive reviews.

@owen_ryan7 said of Byers on X: “We will never forget you”, and @mark_flemdog added: “Absolute pleasure to watch.”

@clurrrrxgx said: “He absolutely loves the club, the fans and his teammates, just everything about it. Was a brilliant signing and he’ll be massively missed.”

And the Owls’ decision to hand Dawson a new deal has also turned heads. The Sheffield Wednesday academy man lost his place in the side to James Beadle who the Owls are desperate to re-sign.

Many believe that Dawson should move on for the betterment of his own career, with @tomyuto saying: “Dawson should move on for me. He needs to be a number 1.”

@LbRudyard said: “With due respect what’s the point of offering Dawson a new contract? We have a young keeper coming through who will be second choice and we need a new first-team goalkeeper. Dawson isn’t good enough I’m sorry he’s not at Championship level.”

The news on Dawson comes soon after Sheffield Wednesday handed a new deal to young shot-stopper Pierce Charles.

Elsewhere, a few were surprised to see that Delgado was not only on a one-year deal, but also let go; he signed last summer but was limited to just 12 appearances due to a hip injury, never featuring under Rohl.

@MlLindley said: “Would like to seen Delgado given another season? But perhaps he might want to go home or to Spain.”

But on the whole, fans seem pretty content with the club’s retained list, and hopeful that it’s a sign that the club are more under control and showing more ruthlessness with the squad.

Letting go several players certainly opens up space for Rohl to bring in some younger blood and hopefully they’ll sign on varying lengths of contracts, so that Sheffield Wednesday don’t continue on this pattern of releasing several names every summer.

Here’s what some more Sheffield Wednesday fans had to say about the retained list…

@MmivTom: “Zero complaints. Knew Byers, Gregory and James we’re gone months back so isn’t a shock. Gives Danny room to work.”

@SteveJ2304: “Pleased with all those contract offers. Let’s hope to hear about signatures on them soon. Plenty of momentum and continuity to keep from the end of last season with those guys – other additions.”

@rkhargreaves: “Really going to miss Georgie Byers, and think Reece James and Lee Gregory deserved to be treated better with loans. But I fully understand all those decisions and can’t argue with any of it, glad to see those players rewarded with contracts that deserved them!”

@RussAmos333: “Sensible retained list and contract offers. Big summer ahead.”
