Voice your opinion on LSP revitalization | Jersey Journal editorial

Phase 2 of the revitalization of Liberty State Park in Jersey City will involve a new master plan for the waterfront area, the southern end and Caven Point Peninsula. In this panel prepared by the state Department of Environmental Protection for its May 11 open house, the area is labeled with what's there now.
A southern athletics hub is planned for the southern end. Here, the state Department of Environmental Protection gives three examples of how the hub might be laid out.
The state Department of Environmental Protection is also looking to get feedback on how people would like the flow and feel of the Phase 2 areas of Liberty State Park to be when completed.

It’s time once again to let your voice be heard on the future of Liberty State Park.

The public comment period on initial ideas for revitalizing the park’s waterfront and southern areas, including Caven Point Peninsula, is open through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

The areas include those we already know, love and enjoy, but they’re scheduled for a makeover so the state Department of Environmental Protection is seeking the public’s input.

The initial concepts and alternatives for this stage of the park’s revitalization were unveiled Saturday during an open house. The drawing boards are now on the DEP’s website as part of a survey soliciting gut reactions, information on how you use the park now, and what you envision for the future.

As with previous visioning surveys, the concepts presented are light on nuts-and-bolts details like transportation and parking, presumably to let respondents use their virtual magic wands and then have consultants figure out how to make dreams work.

None of the initial concepts put on the drawing boards seem to include the type of outsized athletic or entertainment venues being pushed by those associated with the billionaire owner of the adjacent Liberty National Golf Club.

That’s a good thing and clearly reflective of public input the DEP has solicited and received so far in this already yearslong process.

But we cannot let our guards down.

The next meeting of the controversial advisory design task force, meanwhile, is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal at the north end of the park and via Zoom. (To get the Zoom link, go to dep.nj.gov/event/liberty-state-park-design-task-force-public-meeting-20240521/.)

The task force meeting will also include a public comment session starting at 7:30 p.m.
