On October 7, 2023, Shani Louk was among the thousands of attendees at the Supernova music festival near Kibbutz Re'im in southern Israel.
What was supposed to be a joyous celebration of music and community quickly turned into a nightmare as Hamas terrorists launched a brutal assault, killing over 260 civilians.
Louk, a passionate music enthusiast, found herself caught in the crossfire of this horrific attack.
In the aftermath of the attack, distressing footage emerged that would become one of the defining images of the terror event. The video showed Hamas militants surrounding Louk's semi-nude and badly injured body on the back of a pickup truck, parading it through the streets of Gaza. This heartbreaking scene captured the inhumanity and cruelty that Louk and countless others had endured.
In the weeks and months that followed, the fate of Shani Louk remained shrouded in uncertainty. There were doubts about whether she had survived her injuries and was being held captive in Gaza, receiving medical treatment. However, these hopes were dashed when forensic examiners found a piece of her skull, a grim confirmation that she had not survived the attack.

After a painstaking search, the Israeli military announced on May 17, 2024, that Shani Louk's body had been retrieved, along with the remains of two other hostages, Itzhak Gelerenter and Amit Buskila. The bodies were discovered in a tunnel in Gaza, a tragic end to the search for the missing victims.
The recovery of hostages' bodies was a bittersweet moment, as it shed light on the broader hostage crisis unfolding in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas war.
According to Israeli authorities, approximately 125 of the 250 people abducted during the Supernova attack remain in captivity, with the fate of many still unknown.
Shani Louk's story was not an isolated incident. In the weeks and months following the attack, the Israeli government confirmed the deaths of several other hostages, including British-Israeli citizen Nadav Popplewell, who was reported to have died from wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike.
