Report: Liverpool now in pole position to sign 'extraordinary' £51m midfielder; Anfield seen as ideal for him

Liverpool are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window as the Reds hierarchy and FSG look to usher in a new era at Anfield.

With Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool at the end of the season and Arne Slot taking the reins, there’s a lot of work to be done to maintain continuity at Anfield.

Plenty of top players are being linked with a summer move to Anfield, including one who Slot knows quite well from their time together in Dutch football.

The player in question is Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, and speculation linking him and Liverpool has been intensifying in recent weeks.

Now, a report from Italy has suggested that the Reds are in pole position to sign the 26-year-old.

Tuttojuve have claimed that it’ll be difficult for Juventus to match what Atalanta want for Koopmeiners.

The report says Gian Piero Gasperini’s side will not offer any discount, meaning any suitors must be ready to invest €60million (£51million).

With that in mind, Juve could stop chasing Koopmeiners, meaning he could leave Serie A, which is where Liverpool could come in.

Tuttojuve reckon that the Reds are the ‘ideal destination’ for the player, seemingly because their finances would enable them to match La Dea’s demand.

Who is Liverpool target Teun Koopmeiners?

Although Liverpool bolstered their midfield ranks significantly last season, Koopmeiners would no doubt be a great shout for the Reds and a potential upgrade on Wataru Endo.

Koopmeiners has been shining for Atalanta in recent years. He has registered 112 appearances, 26 goals and 12 assists for the Bergamo club. He also has 20 Netherlands caps to his name.

The ‘extraordinary‘ talent would be a versatile option for Liverpool’s new manager as he’s able to operate in multiple roles in the middle of the park.

Back in 2021, Total Football Analysis wrote: “The Dutchman is an extremely composed and cultured player at the base of midfield.

“And since he is left-footed and can drop back to play at centre-back as well, there have been some comparisons to his compatriot Daley Blind, as well as to Nemanja Matic.”
