Driver suffers life-threatening injuries, 2 others hurt in N.J. crash, police say

One driver suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash Friday afternoon on a busy Atlantic County highway, police said.

The crash involved two cars and happened in the West Atlantic City section of Egg Harbor Township on the Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor Township Police Chief Fredrick Spano told NJ Advance Media.

A 2016 Ford Escape being driven by a 29-year-old Atlantic City woman, was making a left turn out of the Petro AC Gas Station to continue eastbound on the Black Horse Pike while a 2014 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on the highway in the inside lane of travel, according to a release from the department. The Civic was approaching the entrance to the gas station.

The Ford accelerated from the parking lot and into the roadway, directly into the path of travel of the Civic, which hit Escape on its driver side, causing both cars to rotate, investigators said.

The driver of the Escape was not wearing her seatbelt at the time and was ejected from the vehicle, authorities said.

She was treated at the scene by Egg Harbor Township EMS and AtlantiCare Paramedics and transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Campus Trauma Unit for life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The driver and two passengers of the Civic were also taken to the same hospital for treatment for moderate injuries, police said.

The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending, the department said.
